Francis Mercier & Magic System – Premier Gaou

“1er Gaou” which literally means “First Fool” in Ivorian slang is a song by Ivorian Zouglou artists Magic System, taken from their album of the same name.  The song is an autobiographical account of a situation involving the group’s lead singer Salif “A’Salfo” Traoré and his ex-girlfriend who tried to hook up with him again when he became famous.  Originally recorded and released in 1999, in their native Abidjan the song first became a hit in Côte d’Ivoire and other African countries; and with a 2002 remix, it became a smash indie hit in France turning the little-known Magic System into celebrities.

Francis Mercier takes on the challenge of breathing new life into Magic System’s globally-renowned ‘Premier Gaou’. The energized Afro House rework is a lifelong dream come true for the Haitian American DJ!  We love the visuals.
